Senior Scientist (all genders) - Genomic Medicine

Are you eager to actively shape the development of innovative therapeutic programs? In this three year fixed term position, you work at the interface of science, strategy, and collaboration, closely partnering with cross functional teams and external companies. You drive projects along the entire drug discovery value chain — from target validation to the identification of preclinical candidates — taking ownership, contributing your scientific expertise, and ensuring that critical go/no go decisions are made swiftly and effectively.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • You facilitate or co-lead the development of therapeutic programmes in cross-functional teams, including close collaboration with partner companies
  • You initiate and support therapeutic programmes together with key stakeholders, driving rapid and evidence-based go/no-go decisions within project teams
  • You lead or co-lead therapeutic research programmes through preD1, D1 and D2 stages
  • You support and co-lead cross-functional research teams to accelerate target identification and screening activities
  • You work across DDS biology subclusters and in cross-functional teams to select, design, and deliver high-quality compounds along the drug discovery value chain, from target validation to the identification of a preclinical candidate
  • You plan and execute research projects in matrixed, cross-functional teams to advance therapeutic hypotheses
  • As a scientific point of contact within project teams, you provide guidance on modality choice, lead finding strategy, and mode of action identification
  • You assess and prepare reports and insights on the feasibility of therapeutic strategies across therapeutic areas, enabling aligned and data-driven go/no-go decisions
  • You take ownership and accountability for driving projects with urgency toward key inflection points
  • You evaluate CROs and internal capabilities to enable project teams to make informed, project-specific decisions
  • In matrixed, cross-functional teams, you coordinate research assistants and foster strong collaboration across functions
  • You facilitate ideation and drive the pursuit of therapeutic programmes with internal and external collaborators, including arm’s length partner companies
  • You contribute to self-empowered matrix teams in line with Bayer’s VACC leadership principles by enabling, empowering, and supporting colleagues in a high-performance environment with a strong culture of psychological safety
  • You foster a culture of ownership in support of the overall strategy, promoting peer accountability across portfolio deliverables and beyond
  • You have the opportunity to lead or co-lead strategic initiatives and present scientific insights to senior management and key stakeholders

WHO YOU ARE

  • You hold a PhD in biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, pharmacy, or a related field
  • You bring several years’ experience in genomic medicine modalities such as siRNA or ASO or strong experience in biological assay design and execution within a pharmaceutical research environment
  • You have a solid understanding of the biotherapeutics drug discovery process and are comfortable working in a modality agnostic research setting
  • You demonstrate scientific knowledge in at least one of Bayer’s key disease areas: oncology, cardiovascular, renal, or immunology
  • Strong expertise in target biology, modality selection, and drug discovery workflows defines you
  • Solid experienced in cross functional project work within pharmaceutical research is advantageous
  • You are confident in evaluating scientific data, CRO capabilities, and development strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills and ability to collaborate effectively in diverse, high performing, multidisciplinary teams is part of your work ethic
  • You show high learning agility, strong self organization, and a proactive ownership mindset
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken to present complex scientific content clearly and convincingly, rounds off your profile

This is a fixed-term contract for 36 months.
